Если рассматривать ценовую эластичность спроса, то дуговая эластичность - это соотношение процентного изменения величины спроса Q к процентному изменению цены Р в пределах отР0 до Р1. Ее можно также представить в виде следующей формулы: 
где P0 - первоначальная цена, Q0 - исходное количество товара, P1 - новая цена, Q1 - новое количество. Поскольку дуговая эластичность является показателем эластичности спроса в определенных пределах изменения цены (от P0 до P1), она лишь приблизительно соответствует эластичности спроса.
